Logistical challenge in Bucharest

21. August 2008

There are only three days of racing on the 3.1 kilometre long Bucharest Ring, but the preparation took over three weeks. In total, including the rebuilding of the city track after the races, the job of the organisers lasts more than four weeks.

On the 1st of August the organisation started creating the city track around the parliament building in the Romanian capital Bucharest. They started putting seven kilometres of concrete elements with mounted fences around the 3.1 kilometre long circuit. That meant a total of 1750 blocks with a total weight of over 8.000 tons. Due to the hot Romanian summer and the dense traffic this work could only be carried out during the night.

From Friday, the 14th of August the use of the streets where the race takes place was only allowed in one direction. Four days later these streets were completely closed for normal traffic. Wednesday after the event the public can drive again in this area.

The blocks of concrete mentioned earlier, that the organisation bought one year ago from the former street circuit in Bilbao, were stored in Bucharest, but not within short distance to the track. So they had to be transported to the circuit by trucks. Only for building the track 500 trucks were required.

Around the elements of concrete that are directly next to the track to fence it in, eleven kilometres of hoarding were put together to confine the whole area of the event. In this field also five grandstands are located with a total capacity of 8,300 seats. In addition standing areas for 30,000 people are provided. Until today 16,500 fans have bought presale tickets.

The grandstands are from Germany and were transported by 20 trucks. For the whole construction of the course and the paddock 1,000 trucks were employed. That also includes 300 mobile toilets and eight mobile sanitary containers. For the race director, the medical centre and other fields of organisation 40 containers were set up around the Bucharest Ring.

To guarantee maximum security during the racing weekend more than 250 security members are involved.
