5th race of FIA GT will not be staged in Bucharest

19. Juni 2009

On Friday 12th of June the organizer of the FIA GT Championship has been informed in writing, that the 5th race of the FIA GT Championship will not be staged in Bucharest on 7th-9th August 2009, as initially scheduled.

In 2006 the Bucharest Ring S.R.L signed a contract with the City of Bucharest. This contract is signed and stamped by the City of Bucharest. On the basis of that agreement the Bucharest Ring S.R.L holds the right to organize and promote the Bucharest City Challenge until the year 2015. In the light of the aforementioned contract the Bucharest City Challenge has been very successfully run by the Bucharest Ring S.R.L in the years 2007 and 2008. Despite the valid and binding existing contract the City of Bucharest consistently denied its legal obligation to grant Bucharest Ring S.R.L the right to stage the Bucharest Challenge in 2009 as well. The said breach of contract by the City of Bucharest has left no other choice for the Bucharest Ring S.R.L than to cancel the Bucharest City Challenge in 2009.

The 5th round of the 2009 FIA GT Championship should now be staged on the Hungaroring in Budapest (Hungary) on August 29th - 30th.

The Bucharest Ring S.R.L instructed a German and a Romanian law firm to file a lawsuit. The Bucharest Ring S.R.L will assert damage claims against the City of Bucharest because of a breach of contract.

Hartmut Beyer, the managing director of the Bucharest Ring S.R.L., personally regrets the recent frustrating developments indeed, which led to the cancellation of the Bucharest City Challenge, a spectacular event which fascinated not only the people of Bucharest but also a worldwide audience.

Bucharest, 17th of June 2009
